RESEARCH into projects worth a minimum of Yen 820 billion ($US 6.7 billion) to improve rail transport in Japanese cities is to be funded by the Ministry of Transport. The ministry will entrust the work this year and next to the Railway Construction Authority and the Transport Policy Research Organisation.
Ten projects have been identified:
* connection between Line 13 of the Teito metro, the Toyoko--Mekama line of the Tokyu Express Electric Railway and the airport line of the Keihin Express Electric Railway to create a new route linking Tokyo central, west, and Haneda airport (estimated cost Yen 130 billion to 150 billion)
* extension of Tokyo municipal metro's Asakusa line to Tokyo Central station (more than Yen 100 billion)
