ON July 23, 1997, I called Pak Asraf (Asraf Abdul Wahab) to inquire if he would consent to being interviewed on his role in promoting literary translations in the 1960s. I had not met him before but his extreme politeness, concern and congeniality made me take an immediate liking to him.
And of course I was flattered. I was speaking to a distinguished editor, translator, noted linguist and a central figure in modern Malay literature. Pak Asraf was the main spokesman in the exciting polemic on post-war Malay literature - Art for Art vs Art for Society. He championed the latter view.
