The current health care environment has changed drastically over the past several years. Demonstrating cost-effectiveness while maintaining positive patient outcomes is the challenge that clinical nephrology practice must directly confront. Nephrology nurses have a responsibility to consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care (Burrows-Hudson, 1999). Many nephrology nurses are interested in reducing the cost of health care for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD).
