Assessing Your Potential to Become a Leader
A constant challenge for the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA) leadership is the identification of future leaders. It is frustrating at all levels of the association trying to recruit individuals to run for office at the chapter, regional and national levels. It is equally frustrating trying to understand why this has become such a difficult task within the association. I am concerned that current leaders are not providing mentoring for future leaders and that members do not see themselves as leaders at any level of the association. It is important to review the characteristics and attributes of a leader in order to evaluate our individual potential as a leader and to identify members who should be mentored in their development as future leaders of the association.
Attributes of a Leader
A review of the attributes of a leader is the foundation needed to assess an individual's potential ability to develop into a successful leader. Carol O'Connor (1997) identifies six skills needed to succeed as a leader:
1. Developing awareness of your strengths and limitations.
2. Understanding people.
3. Exercising power and authority, taking initiative and responsibility, and empowering colleagues.
