AOL, Gateway lead effort.
Foundations associated with America Online and Gateway Computer are spearheading an effort to close the nation's "digital divide" by providing access to the Internet to children in low-income neighborhoods and rural areas.
The new initiative PowerUp, was started through a $10 million grant from the Case Foundation, established by AOL chief executive Steve Case and his wife, Jean. AOL also agreed to provide 100,000 free AOL accounts at schools and community centers across the country.
