FILTERING UPDATE

The Freedom To Read Foundation, the American Library Association's (ALA) sibling organization, has joined several media, technology, and civil liberties groups in filing an amicus brief opposing the Justice Department's appeal of a federal judge's ruling that voided enforcement of the Child Online Protection Act, a.k.a. "CDA II."

The law aimed to block "harmful to minors" material from commercial web sites. However, the brief argues that the law would affect speech far more broadly than that of commercial pornographers, as the government contends. The case will …
