From the original Batman costume to submarine parts, Pilot Air Freight's Portland station has helped ship cargo to its destination for 15 years. The freight-forwarder is in the midst of a sales boom, which pleases Bill Lasater, the owner and founder of the local Pilot Air franchise.

"It's a fast-paced business, very stressful, but very rewarding," Lasater said. In recent years, the Portland operation has averaged about 20 percent sales growth annually, he said. The company's specialty is handling shipments that need special attention, such as trade show displays, secret prototypes or ungainly pieces of machinery.
