St. Charles appears poised to get a convention center and hotel complex, 11 years after the idea first surfaced.

The city has given developers until Oct. 1 to respond to requests for proposals on the plan. Mayor Patti York said more than a dozen firms had picked up packets of information on the project by Sept. 17.

The total project, estimated at about $39 million, would provide a substantial return on investment, said Steve Powell, director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau. Citing figures from the International Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus, he projected spending of $760 per event per delegate, with 500 delegates attending each of 96 events per year - or total …
