Hitachi, Ltd. (4-6, Kanda-Surugada, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-8010, Japan; Tel: 03-3258-1111, Fax: 03-3258-5480) scientists have invented a capillary array electrophoresis system that can laser irradiate a number of capillaries at one time. In the same batch and at the same time, the system also detects fluorescence radiated from fluorophore-labeled sample components that migrate in the capillaries. The laser irradiates through the capillaries to a part where the polyimide coating is removed to detect fluorescence.

The ability to perform on-column fluorescence detection without the need for mechanical or optical scanning provides highly sensitive detection of samples. …
