The world's largest vehicle manufacturer announced earlier this year that it will build a $250 million transmission manufacturing plant near Interstate 95 in White Marsh. Construction on the Allison Transmission plant, which is expected to employ at least 500 autoworkers, is expected to begin within the year, perhaps as early as summer. No decision has yet been made whether GM's van assembly plant on Broening Highway, which employs about 3,000, will remain open after 2000.
