Sep. 16 -- WASHINGTON -- Continental Airlines is planning to shut down its service to Bangor, Maine, on Oct. 30, diminishing the capacity of the international airport and raising broad questions about the impact of airline deregulation in rural parts of the country.
The move infuriated both Maine senators, Republicans Olympia Snowe and Susan M. Collins, who issued a joint statement saying they were "appalled by Continental's decision" and immediately demanded a Senate hearing on the matter.
