Sep. 17 -- A potent new cancer-fighting protein discovered in the Boston lab of Dr. Judah Folkman can be made by slightly altering a drug that's already on the market, and therefore could enter human trials as early as next year, say officials of a Framingham biotech firm.
The new protein seems to be at least as powerful as endostatin, the widely publicized tumor-starving drug also discovered in Folkman's lab. Endostatin is about to enter its first, long-awaited human tests in Boston.
Called antiangiogenic antithrombin, or aaAT, the new protein is being described publicly for the first time today, in the current issue of the journal Science.
