NORFOLK, Va. _ Children in Hampton Roads are medicated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder at about three times the estimated rate for children nationwide, according to a study published Wednesday in the American Journal of Public Health.
The study found that 8 percent to 10 percent of children in elementary grades take ADHD medication at school. By comparison, national estimates say less than 3 percent of children take ADHD medicine either at home or at school, said Gretchen LeFever, the study's lead author.
LeFever said her subsequent research has shown the local percentage climbs to between 16 percent and 18 percent when it includes children who take their medicine at home.
