Aug. 13 -- The United States and Argentina are on the verge of a new air treaty that will give Delta Air Lines a shot at a coveted Atlanta-Buenos Aires nonstop route as early as next year.
Negotiators were polishing off an "open skies" accord that will allow carriers to fly between the two nations at will by 2003.
In the meantime, the agreement would authorize seven new weekly flights by a designated U.S. carrier starting Sept. 1, 2000, and another seven in June 2001.
An announcement of the accord, years in the making, was postponed Thursday afternoon but is expected today.
