After more than 16 years of failed fixes, the DOE is banishing Westinghouse Government Services (Energy Center Site, 4350 Northern Pike, Monroeville, PA 15146) and its tank remediation technology from the Savannah River site at Aiken, Georgia.

Developed to separate radioactive materials from storage tank solutions, the Westinghouse process has continued to produce large quantities of combustible benzene. The week of May 23, Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson called for alternative bids to tackle the 34-million gallons of radioactive waste.
