What a month it's been for The Mirror. First there was Sophie Rhys-Jones's nipple, which played right into the paper's hands, while The Sun used it to shoot itself in the foot. The average man in the gutter may have lapped the nipple up, but The Mirror knew there were quite a few political points to be scored by borrowing the mantle of righteousness and attacking The Sun for despoiling the royal personage to be.
In fact, the editor, Piers Morgan, has done a nice job over the past year or so of cleaning up The Mirror; there's less sex and sleaze and, true, a bit more saccharine. At least it now has a distinctive voice that marks it out from The Sun, which has meanwhile …
