A large national apartment builder is trying to buy land in downtown Sacramento for a $14 million project.

The company, Post Properties of Atlanta, wants to build at least 200 apartments on property it would purchase in the Capitol Towers area at 7th and N streets, three blocks' west of the Capitol. It's also looking for a public subsidy to help with the project.

"We're working on a master plan," said Art Lomenick, a developer with Post. "We're trying to do something that would enhance the neighborhood."

City redevelopment officials regard Post as one of the country's best central-city housing developers and they want Post to build here.
