The Portland area's publicly traded electronic design automation companies are still feeling a little hung over following failed merger and acquisition bids.

Mentor Graphics Corp., OrCAD and Summit Design Inc, all took big hits from special charges in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, a pair of telecommunications companies, Metro One Tele-communications Inc. and GST Telecommunications Inc., reported record results.

Mentor reported first-quarter revenue of $123 million, a 13.5 percent increase from 1998's first quarter. But the revenue gain was more than offset by $16.6 million in special charges taken in the first quarter.
