CONYERS, Ga. _ A month to the day after the Colorado school massacre, another middle-class suburban high school was rocked by gunfire Thursday as a 15-year-old sophomore shot and wounded six fellow students before surrendering in tears.
Witnesses said the boy, distraught after a recent breakup with his girlfriend, ended the shooting spree by sticking a gun in his mouth but was talked out of pulling the trigger by an assistant principal.
``Oh, my God, I'm so scared,'' he cried as police then took him into custody.
Only hours after the rampage at Heritage High School in this Atlanta suburb, President Clinton flew to Littleton, Colo., to console families still in mourning from the April murder-suicide attack by two student gunmen that left 15 people dead at Columbine High School.
Only one of the students wounded Thursday, a 15-year-old girl, was hurt seriously. She was taken by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital, where she was reported in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the lower back and abdomen.
Authorities said the Heritage High gunman rode to school on the bus Thursday morning with a handgun and .22-caliber rifle concealed under a windbreaker. The boy was later charged in juvenile court with a single count of aggravated assault, but Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Read said additional charges would be filed within days. Read also said he would seek to have the teen tried as an adult.
