The merger between the faculty of Islamic Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Islamic Studies Institute took place on Saturday the 1st of Muharram 1420 corresponding to April 17, 1999. This represents an important step in the advancement of Islamic religious scholarship in Brunei Darussalam. The merger took place in accordance with the Titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Accordingly, the two combined institutes will be known as the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Islamic Studies Institute.
Naming the Institute after (the late) Al-Marhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, who upon abdicating the throne in 1967, venerably came to be known as the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, can be an appropriate tribute to commemorate his yeomen services to revive Islam in the Sultanate.
