What will be the lasting effects of the Columbine High School massacre? Will America remember, or care, 10 years from now? Will the images of teens terrorized by marauding gunmen fade from our collective memory like a bad movie? Or, as we hope, will Columbine be the catalyst that changes our nation in fundamental ways?

Early signs suggest that this tragedy, more so than its predecessors, is having a profound effect on many people in many places. If there is to be anything positive to emerge from this slaughter, it will be to reverse the gun lobby's multimillion-dollar …
