Construction firm holds on to basic values.(Mathews Construction)

It's fair to call Mathews Construction a 5-year-old firm with a 37-year-old heritage. The company traces its corporate lineage back to 1962, when builder Pete Mathews set up shop in two adjoining apartments on Manhattan Avenue in Tampa. Herman Oellerich, a Sarasota businessman in the Structural steel industry, provided the loan that launched the firm.

But Mathews Construction, as it exists today, was born in 1994. That's when Oellerich bought the company from Mathews' estate and persuaded his son, David Oellerich, to leave his job with a contractor in Cincinnati and to return to the family business.
