When ScanView launched the ScanMate series at GrafItalia in 1996, the primary competition was the Scitex SmartScanner family and the Linotype-Hell (now Heidelberg Prepress) Topaz. ScanView had been known for its desktop drum scanners, but in response to customer demand it had developed the ScanMate F8. The F8 was based on CCD technology, which ScanView believed had the potential to provide quality comparable to that of PMT devices, and was therefore suitable for professional use.
