Leader of the packs: 105 Meridien's outdoor gear gains foothold.

ESTES PARK - You can't trek through Rocky Mountain National Park without seeing a Mountainsmith backpack or lumbar pack on hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The Golden-based company has built a reputation for its packs that is synonymous with quality.

It was that reputation that made Mountainsmith so attractive to 105 Meridien, the manufacturer based here that bought it last year.

"We thought it was an undervalued company with a lot of credibility in the market," said 105 Meridien president Steve Quisenberry during an interview in his office, in the building that was once the original visitor's center for Rocky Mountain National Park. "It has a great signature look that you can recognize at a distance without even seeing the name - and that is hard to do." …
