Says consolidation will continue, keep banks competitive Hjalma E. Johnson will become president of the American Bankers Association at its national convention in October, becoming only the second Floridian in the 120-year history of the ABA to take on the role.

Johnson sat down with the Tampa Bay Business Journal to discuss the banking industry as it heads into the 21st century.

TBBJ: Over the past year we have seen giant mergers in the financial sector, namely NationsBank/Bank America and Citicorp/Travelers. What benefits do you see coming from these, and what happens next?
