Houston companies attract $7.4 billion in 4th quarter.(initial public offerings)

Houston companies attracted a record $7.4 billion on 43 deals in the fourth quarter of 1998, nearly double the $3.7 raised in 59 deals during the same period of 1997, according to an analysis by Charles P. Young Co.

Four Houston-area initial public offerings raised $4.3 billion during the fourth quarter, five times last year's fourth-quarter amount of $702 million, and more than nine times 1998's third-quarter amount.

Two of the four IPOs were oil and gas companies: Conoco Inc., which raised $4 billion, and Plains All American Pipeline ($261.7 million). The other two were IPOs came from the financial industry: Prosperity Bancshares Inc. ($20.6 million) and …
