TOKYO, March 8 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Microsoft Co., the Japan unit of Microsoft Corp., said today it has begun handing out free software to fix a defect in the company's windows 98 operating system which stems from the so-called "millennium bug."
The software is necessary to eradicate the defect from the Japanese-language version of windows 98, the company said.
The defect means windows 98 may not be able to recognize the arrival of the year 2000, as it is programmed to recognize the passage of years by only the last two digits, meaning it may take the turn of the century to be the beginning of 1900. …
