A former top bureaucrat denied in court on Friday accusations that he received payoffs in exchange for cutting billions of yen from the amount of money defense contractors had to repay the Defense Agency.
Prosecutors say that Kenichi Ueno, a 59-year-old former deputy chief of the Defense Agency's Central Procurement Office, was the main figure behind office's decision to cut 3.5 billion yen from the amount of money two defense suppliers, Toyo Communication Equipment Co. and Niko Electronics Co., were forced to pay back into state coffers after they overcharged the agency. Both contractors are affiliates of the electronics giant NEC Corp.
