Mar. 8 -- Think of the Internet as the Free Speech Movement of the 1990s, with writers, artists and musicians sharing their creative output online. It's democratic, intellectual, even revolutionary -- and all but a handful are giving it away for free.
Today, a Berkeley-based company attempts to launch a Paid Speech Movement. Cybergold Inc. takes a huge step toward realizing a long-held goal of content producers everywhere: A Web marketplace for intellectual property.
Cybergold is debuting a system that will let artists post their works online and charge users a small fee to download them. They even have a way for for consumers to buy such products without shelling out any cash.
The company joins a race to enable musicians, authors, software developers and other artists to operate on their own -- unmolested by editors, producers or bosses -- selling works directly to the public.
