WASHINGTON _ Unable to pinpoint the cause of a national outbreak of deadly bacteria, U.S. Department of Agriculture officials said Thursday they may consider putting labels on hot dogs and lunch meat that warn consumers the products could contain dangerous, even deadly, bacteria.
Federal safety officials are not ready to slap warning labels on hot dogs, and they aren't telling parents to keep lunch meat out of school lunch boxes _ yet.
But they are sufficiently worried to warn consumers there has been a ``breakdown'' in the nation's food safety system that has allowed a rare but deadly form of listeria to contaminate ready-to-eat foods, causing 12 deaths, three miscarriages and illness to 75 others.
