Jan. 5 -- SAN FRANCISCO -- Nearly two years after Apple Computer Inc. advertisements began imploring coales for its Macintosh computers, Apple has mounted a comeback that has astonished the industry. Its new iMac personal computer has become the best-selling desktop machine in America, boosting Apple's share of the market for the first time in years. Better yet, the company is making money again -- $309 million in fiscal 1998, which ended in September.
All of which means that this week's MacWorld, a gathering in San Francisco of Apple computer users, is the most upbeat in a long time. A crowd of about 600 responded yesterday with lusty cheers to the greeting from computer industry journalist David Pogue: "Welcome to the first MacWorld conference that nobody thinks will be the last MacWorld conference."
