Two researchers at the University of Arizona have developed an HIV treatment aimed at bolstering patients' immune systems, rather than trying to kill HIV.

"We're not trying to kill the virus. We're trying to reduce the immune damage it does," said Ronald Watson, Arizona Prevention Center.

Watson and fellow researcher John Marchalonis, University of Arizona College of Medicine, have patented the therapy, which involves treating HIV positive patients with a protein fragment called a receptor peptide, found in human T cells - key players in immune defense.
