Pharmaceutical companies flock to try drugs here
In early November, San Francisco-based drug manufacturer VaxGen Inc. selected the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta Inc. to conduct one of the most advanced studies of an AIDS vaccine called AIDSVAX.
VaxGen is among many major drug-makers testing potential AIDS remedies and treatments in Atlanta.
Almost all of the AIDS drugs already on the market have been tested in Atlanta, mostly through the AIDS Research Consortium (ARCA). Representatives of large pharmaceutical companies such as Glaxo-Wellcome Co., Pharmacia & Upjohn, DuPont Pharmaceuticals Co. and Gilead Sciences Inc. say they come to Atlanta to test their potentially life-saving drugs because of the reputation of ARCA founder and chief investigator Dr. Melanie Thompson.
