In early October, Orbit Technologies, Inc. (Carlsbad, CA; Tel: 760/918- 9168) announced it had filed for a new patent application on its polymer encapsulation and stabilization system for mixed hazardous waste. The system was primarily developed for the stabilization of hazardous salts in a waste form suitable for shallow land burial. These hazardous materials are granular waste salts that result from neutralized solidified acid solutions used in the recovery of weapons material and may include soluble chromium compounds, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, plutonium 238, plutonium 239, and uranium 238.
