Counterfeiting ring uncovered WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Customs officers investigating suspected footwear duty evasions in Tennessee have stumbled onto what they believe is a huge shoe counterfeiting fraud involving several importers across the nation.
Import specialists have so far uncovered 24 separate shipments in which counterfeits of brand name athletic shoes, such as Reebok, Keds and Pony, were concealed.
In one shipment alone, customs officers identified 80 trademark violations involving hundreds of pairs of shoes. "It looks as though the U.S. footwear business has gone bananas," commented an officer on the case who wished not to be identified.
