Corporate salaries still soaring, survey shows

Public companies may be riding on the bottom, but salaries are still heading for the top, according to a recent survey on executive compensation in Houston.

As a group, the 15 highest paid public company executives in Houston received an average pay increase of 27 percent in 1985. Many of these top moneymakers headed energy-related companies stung by falling oil and gas prices.

The man who made the most money, however, heads a highly profitable insurance conglomerate. Harold Hook, chief executive officer of giant American General Corp., pulled down $904,000 in 1985. Hook also pocketed the biggest salary increase …
