Bates' gear sent to Afghan rebels

The Bates Shoe Co. has sent $32,000 worth of military boots and shoes to Afghan rebels fighting Soviet troops in Afghanistan.

Bates general manager Martin Neslusan said the idea to send the slight irregulars to the rebels came from an employe, Jay McCune, who spent two years in Afghanistan with the Peace Corp.

McCune read an article in Reader's Digest about materials shortages among the rebels, and suggested to Neslusan that the 750 pairs of boots and 1,200 pairs of shoes be sent to them.
