Manufacturers Find Dress Slacks For Young Men Making a Comeback

NEW YORK -- The future is beginning to look up for young men's dress slacks manufacturers after a period in which casual bottoms have been commanding the spotlight--and open-to-buy dollars.

In recent seasons, retailers, especially department stores, have been allotting most of their dollars to casual bottoms and just covering the basics in dress. This is beginning to change as a result of strong retail sell-throughs on polyester/Rayon fancies in the last several months, manufacturers said.

The acceptance at retail of these fancies has caused sales of basic bi-blends and tri-blends--traditionally the core of the young men's dress slacks business--to dwindle, they said, while noting that that segment of the business had become very price competitive.

Another reason for the resurgence of young men's dress bottoms is that consumers are moving from a "strictly casual pants attitude" …
