The marriage of political convenience between David Cameron and Nick Clegg has been going through a rough patch lately, although they seem determined to put a brave face on it.

Asked how they were getting on, the Deputy Prime Minister smiled at the questioner yesterday: "Fine, thank you very much. We spoke about it this morning."
