The bodies of two West soldiers were repatriated to home soil yesterday amid sombre scenes in Oxfordshire.

Three soldiers killed in the past fortnight in Afghanistan were brought back to RAF Brize Norton yesterday, among them Lance Corporal Matthew Smith, who was shot at a checkpoint in the Nad e-Ali district of Helmand Province on August 10.

The 26-year-old from the Royal Engineers, was a father of four based at Perham Down in Wiltshire.

He was repatriated alongside Bristol soldier Lt Andrew Chesterman, from 3 Rifles, who was killed in the same district a day earlier and …
