BOSTON -- A new soling compound developed by Quabaug Rubber Co., North Brookfield, is being used for both high-performance running shoes and hiking boots.

The Vibram Infinity compound may be the first soling material to satisfy the performance needs of the two divergent markets, sources said.

The Infinity can be utilized for both running and hiking because it is a low-volume, flexible, yet durable material, according to Dave Hill, vice-president of sales, Quabaug. The material is highly abrasion resistant, yet durable enough to be molded in a very thin sole, he explained.
