Time to shine light in dark corners The US presidential election process has some very attractive features, upon which we in SA can only gaze wistfully. Open ambition is not only tolerated but essential. Candidates have to declare themselves two years or more in advance of the actual election. This is not regarded as disloyal or careerist, as it is in SA, but rather as patriotic.

Indeed, the toughest stage for those who want to be president is actually the preliminary intra-party contest, where they fight one another.
