LAS CRUCES -- Some tinkering remains and a final decision needs to be made when to activate the Las Cruces Notification System.

But it could happen as soon as next week, and almost assuredly by the end of the month. The notification system will enable the city to send emergency and informational messages to thousands of city residents by land-line telephone, cell phone, text messaging and email.

For the most part, city officials said the system will be voluntary. People will be encouraged to register online, where they can determine the types of advisories they want to receive from the city.
