The Broward Public Defender's Office is demanding the court scrutinize a Pembroke Pines juvenile center following allegations of children being physically abused at the facility.

After a tense two-hour hearing, a three-judge panel on Thursday postponed a decision on whether it's the court's responsibility to scrutinize operations at Thompson Academy, a 154-bed youth offender and treatment facility, and, if necessary, to remove teenage boys.

Broward Circuit Judges Merrilee Ehrlich, Michael Orlando and Carlos Rodriguez said they need more time to review whether they're authorized to proceed in the case. But they did agree to expand the attorneys' access …
