STONEHENGE English Heritage announced on Thursday that work was officially under way on an ambitious GBP27 million plan to transform the surroundings of Stonehenge. One of the two major A-roads either side of the iconic monument will go, as will the tatty late-1960s concrete visitors' centre, and tourists of the future coming to the stones will have to travel a mile and a half across a "neolithic landscape" to see the stones up close. The news marked the biggest change at the stones since the building of the visitors' centre, which included a tunnel under the A344 back in the late 1960s - in the days when visitors could walk among the stones and touch them.
