I had the privilege last month of joining The Oregonian as editorial and commentary editor. The weeks since have offered the usual newbie challenges, from working on a new computer system to finding the cheapest parking lot within walking distance of the paper. Then, there's the big newbie challenge presented by the Portland area itself, whose history, institutions and issues will be harder to master than a U-Park ticket dispenser.
