The skyrocketing tuition of state and private universities across the country has long been a major problem for many high school graduates, especially those from poor families, often forcing them to halt their studies.
Darsono has responded to the challenge of education fees by establishing Pamulang University (Unpam), a private institution managed under the Sasmita Jaya Foudation. Unpam offers cheap tuition for high school graduates with financial problems.
The Directorate of Higher Education (Dikti) at the Education and Culture Ministry determined the lowest tuition standard for a university student was Rp 18 million (US$1,900) per year; Unpam charges students Rp 1.8 million a year.
"It means that our students only have to pay Rp 900,000 per semester and they can even pay the tuition in monthly installments of Rp 150,000," he told The Jakarta Post in a recent interview at …
