At a recent Washington seminar (organized by the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation in New York and the Center for National Interest in Washington) which coincided with the G20 summit in Los Cabos and the meeting between Presidents Putin and Obama, I again heard my American counterparts from various analytic and power structures articulating the position of the West and in particular of the United States with regard to what is happening in Syria today and giving the most diverse interpretations and explanations of Russia's position on this issue.

We should primarily draw attention to the fact that Western political and diplomatic circles, like the Western public, have formed several myths about what is happening in that country.
