June 12--South girls' tennis coach Sam Kercheval already knew Denise Azcui was something special. But anybody else needing confirmation could have simply watched her perform at the Jasper Invitational during the fourth week of the Panthers' season this spring. "We went down to Jasper, with a bunch of good teams there, and Denise just rolled through her entire draw," Kercheval recalled last week. "She played and beat three really good players, all girls who were voted All-District, and she won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2. "So she dropped just six games in three matches, all against top players, one of whom was a senior. It was the most dominating weekend from a high school singles player I've ever seen." And it came from a freshman. Playing No. 1 singles. And it came, as it turned out, from The H-T All-Area Girls' Tennis Player of the Year.
