Differences in 3-A baseball combatants apparent.

June 01--The differences between the opposing teams in this weekend's N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A baseball championship series, Eastern champion Charles B. Aycock and Western king Weddington, are apparent. The teams, which play the first game of their best-of-three finals series Friday at 5 p.m. in Zebulon's Five County Stadium, share little in program backgrounds or the manner in which each arrived at the state championship. Game 2 of the finals series will be played Saturday at 11 a.m. in Five County and the third game, if necessary, will begin at 5 p.m. Aycock brings a deep baseball tradition, having won state 3-A championships in 1974 and 2007, the latter under Charles Davis, now in his 22nd season as head coach. In its 51-year history, Aycock has been regional finalist five times and over the years has sent dozens of players to the collegiate ranks. Quite a few former Golden Falcons have gone on to play professionally. Weddington, on the other hand, opened its doors in 2000 and began playing varsity sports in 2002. Prior to winning the …
